Heat level:this is a good deal
Countries:available in USA
Details:1600SC Server, 2.8GHz, 512MB, 73GB SCSI, $600 $550
This is a good deal for someone looking for a powerful & robust server. Click the above link to find a Dell Poweredge 1600SC server with a starting price of $1521, then configure as follows:
  • Free Upgrade to Xeon 2.8GHz processor
  • single processor only (machine is dual capable)
  • no operating system
  • 512MB DDR SDRAM 1x512
  • non-redundant power supply
  • 48x CD-ROM
  • standard keyboard
  • Logitech mouse
  • no monitor
  • 1 year parts + onsite labor (this option subtracts $199 from the starting price)
  • cabled SCSI drives attached to embedded SCSI controller with no RAID (you will get an error unless you check this option)
  • "None" on the primary RAID controller (option subtracts $499)
  • first hard drive: free upgrade to 73GB 10,000rpm SCSI hard drive
  • second hard drive: none (option subtracts $249)
  • onboard gigabit network adapter
That price comes to $574 with free ground shipping, a good deal for this kind of server computer. Mandatory sales tax applies, which will probably bring its price to around $600 for most customers.

There is another good deal for someone who is computer savvy and wants to double the performance, power, and capacity of this server without breaking the bank. If you notice on the configuration pages, Dell's upgrade prices are very high. If you want a second 2.8GHz processor, it would cost another $599. Another 512MB of RAM (for 1GB total) costs another $299. And a second 73GB 10,000rpm hard drive costs another $400. That's an additional $1298 to upgrade this computer, but you can get these upgrades for just another $600 more. If you simply follow the configuration instructions above and set the order quantity to 2 when it shows up in your cart, you can get 2 servers for around $1200 after tax ($600 each) then just remove the parts from one server and double them up in the second server when they both arrive. So for around $1200, you can double the parts into one server to effectively get a dual processor 2.8GHz Xeon server with 1GB of ECC memory and two 73GB 10,000rpm drives, and you will have a spare motherboard, case, and power supply. I think each power supply is hot swappable, so you may also be able to insert the extra power supply in the server to have redundancy.

Specs on the 1600SC can be found here.

This server can get very loud, so it would be best if put in a server room or somewhere that won't mind a lot of noise.

Update (12/14): The price on this confiration dropped by $50. Now you can get the same configuration for around $550 after tax.
