It's no secret companies like Garmin are getting crushed by Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, and other phone navigation apps. There are still some big advantages to using a dedicated GPS navigator:
  • Works separately than your phone, so making/receiving calls does not affect navigation.
  • No cell signal needed to navigate the maps. Garmin only needs to see the sky (so it won't work in tunnels), but will work in areas that have weak or no cell signal.
  • Longer battery life than navigating on a phone. This should give at least 10 hours of navigation on battery, when not plugged in to your car's electrical outlet.
  • Cheaper than buying an iPhone or Android phone.
  • Bigger screen and easier to mount on the windsheild than most smartphones.
The biggest disadvantages of this Garmin model:
  • Lack of traffic updates. Some Garmin models can help you avoid traffic delays, but even those may not work as well as Waze and Google Maps.
  • Includes North America maps only. If you travel overseas, you will need to leave your Garmin behind.
