If you are looking for a sleek, sexy laptop, this is not it (I suggest you check out the Lenovo Carbon X1 for that). On the other hand, if you want a laptop that is reliable, has plenty of power for most home offices or for most students, then this is a great option and a great value. Pair it with a docking station and it is just about perfect for most users. The Intel i5 2.5 GHz processor is not bleeding edge technology, but it is plenty for spreadsheets, word processing, email, and web surfing. 4 GB of RAM is sufficient for 80% of computers users today, but for the other 20%, you can upgrade this laptop to 10 GB by swapping a single DIMM of RAMM that is easily accessible by removing a single screw from the bottom panel. The more adventurous can upgrade to 16 GB, but the process is a bit more involved (but well documented on youtube). The keyboard has a great feel and withstands a lot of use and abuse. The screen is very clear, even in bright light. The multi-drive is a little noisy, but is also very forgiving of disks that are a little marred or scratched. The upward facing speakers sound okay (I still have external speakers, but they are not too bad, certainly sufficient for hotel use when traveling). I have several of these and have even given them to my college-aged kids. Again, not sexy, but very effective.Read full review

Laptop seems fine, but no Windows product key included and I have been given the run around by Newegg for several days now to receive one. The laptop came shrink wrapped with no documentation, no Windows product key, nothing. Never, ever again. Complete waste of my time.

I bought the T420 used at a reasonable price. I had read quite a few good reviews and even though this model came out around 2011, decided to get it. I had read that it was modular and easy to upgrade and that has been true. When it arrived, I switched to a 256 SSD which I already had. I reinstalled Windows 7 and then did the Windows 10 uprgrade. Then I took out the 4 GB of memory that came with it and put in 16 GB (2x8). No problems. The only glitch and it's no big deal is I haven't been able to find a bluetooth driver yet. Not a deal breaker. This machine came with the i5 processor and I've been thinking about switching it to the i7 2620M. I don't need to but I'm on a roll. Bottom line, even though the machine is about 5 years old, it's still a great laptop.

Bought this laptop to run Linux, I did a little time here and there on ebay over a few days looking for ThinkPads that didn't have hard drives and OS to keep the price down (as I have drives and Linux is free) but then this laptop came along and the deal was too good to pass over. The seller provides great documentation of their testing process, and the shipping was free and fast. Very happy to have a well built laptop with a great feeling keyboard, i5 vpro, 8 gigs of ram to start with. Bumped it down to Ubuntu 14 and already running a number of VMs with VMware much faster than my i5 non-vpro windows laptop.

After I installed an SSD and Windows 10/64 this thing is as fast as any currently sold laptop on the market. It boots to Windows in under 25 seconds and has absolutely no lag whatsoever. I only have 4GB RAM installed but can go up to 16GB. The HD display that comes standard on the s model is a beauty! The only thing I didn't like were the tactile raised dots on the trackpad. I scraped them off with a razor blade so it's nice and smooth now. It's actually a sticker so it's easily replaced anyway. I replaced the display hinges which were a little loose for only $12.49 so it's like new again. These were well over $1000 when new and I can see why. If you can get a clean one for $250 or less then buy it ... you won't be disappointed. You can even install a battery in place of the optical drive if you don't really need one to get truly fantastic battery life. Check out the YouTube reviews on this thing. It's amazing how this thing compares to the new stuff !!!Read full review
