Coupon code USPTSERIES14 gives 20% off of Thinkpad Notebook Computers. This is a great deal.
  1. Go to Lenovo.com
  2. Click the 14 inch model on the left.
  3. Click the Thinkpad T61 choice on the very right, or the one second from the right. They are model number 8891 or 8897. The model number is displayed just above the Customize link near the bottom of the page.
  4. Configure the notebook, then apply code USPTSERIES14 in the cart.
The coupon gives 20% off of the entire computer, including upgrades. If you choose the base configuration, the laptop's price comes to $843 for the 8897 model or $903 for the 8891. We recommend some upgrades, such as:
  • Thinkpad T61 8897CTO
  • Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 2GHz (adds $37 or $30 after 20% discount).
  • Intel GMA X3100 graphics
  • 1GB memory

Price comes to $984 with free shipping. That's a very good deal for that configuration which usually sells for over $1300.

These configurations can upgrade their memory from 1GB to 2GB for $60, or $48 after 20% discount applied in the cart. While some third-party 1GB SO-DIMM modules can occasionally be found elsewhere for around $30 to $40, it's still a good deal worth considering. Also an "upgrade" from Windows Vista Basic to Windows XP Professional for about $20 is well worth considering, at least until Microsoft straightens out performance issues with Vista.

Thinkpads are popular in the business world because of their superior reliability. Lenovos start at higher prices than most other notebook computers, but are cheaper after adding upgrades.

Update: When doing a copy/paste of the coupon code, make sure there are no spaces before or after the letters, otherwise the code will fail.

Also, we strongly recommend paying a few dollars extra for Windows XP Professional instead of Vista. Unless you need something only offered in Vista, like DirectX 10, Windows XP will perform better with nearly every task.
