Details:Roundtrip US to Tokyo From 30,000 Miles and $61 in May/June
Normally, points/miles earned on airlines' frequent flier programs can often be redeemed at a rate of about 20,000-40,000 for roundtrip domestic US travel, and about 60,000 to 120,000 for International.

However for the moment, Delta is asking for only about 34,000 to 40,000 miles for a roundtrip ticket from some US cities to Tokyo, Japan.

To get the deal,
  1. Go to Delta.com
  2. Choose TYO or HND as the destination. Select "Round Trip" for a simple search, or you can choose "Multi-City" and pick to fly to Tokyo from one city and return to another city within the US.
  3. Choose to travel on Monday-Thursday days in May or June.
  4. Check the "Shop With Miles" link, then run your search.
To buy, you must either have: The downside is, the deal only works when choosing flights on a Monday through Thursday. The points nearly double when choosing to travel on Friday-Sunday.

Deal works throughout May and June, including travel over Memorial Day.

  • Roundtrip from Denver, CO to Tokyo for 30,000 miles plus $61.
  • Roundtrip from San Francisco (SFO) to Tokyo for 30,000 miles plus $61.
  • Roundtrip from Seattle, WA to Tokyo for 34,000 miles plus $61.
  • Roundtrip from Newark, NJ to Tokyo for 40,000 miles plus $61.
  • Roundtrip from Washington, DC or Baltimore to Tokyo for 40,000 miles plus $61.
They seem to route many outbound flights through either Portland, Oregon, Seattle, Washington, or Minneapolis.

If there are no outbound flights from your city that work for you, perhaps try a "multi-city" search (instead of round-trip), originate from Portland, Seattle, or Minneapolis to Tokyo, then return from Tokyo to your city. This method is called, "Open Jaw", where you originate travel from one place and return to another, and can cost less than a single round-trip ticket. You would buy a separate ticket to get you between home and the other city.

Example Open Jaw deals:
  • Say you live in Denver, you could buy the deal from Seattle to Tokyo, then Tokyo to Denver, CO for 32,000 miles plus $61. Separately buy a flight from Denver to Seattle the day before for about $75, and visit Seattle for a day before catching your flight to Tokyo.
  • Say you live in Austin, TX, you could buy the deal from Portland (PDX) to Tokyo, then Tokyo to Austin, TX for 34,000 miles plus $61. Separately buy a flight from Austin to Portland the day before for about $120, and visit Portland for a day before catching your flight to Tokyo.
