Details:Change Passwords and Enable 2-Step Authentication:
Recently a major bug in the Internet's primary encryption protocol was shown to be vulnerable. The bug, being called Heartbleed, can allow someone to steal personal information including your username & password, from a site that was vulnerable before administrators patch the bug (test sites for the vulnerability).

It is strongly recommended that you do two things:
  1. Change your passwords on sites that you use often, and try not to re-use the same password on different sites.
  2. Enable 2-step verification on sites which support it. Some are listed below.
Everyone is suggesting that you change your password, but few are talking about 2-step verification. If you have 2-step verification, your cannot would be nearly impossible for a hacker to log in even if they have your password.

2-step (2-factor) authentication adds an extra layer of protection by not only requiring something you know (like your password) but also requires something you have (like your phone). It sounds like a pain, but most sites make it easy to use by remembering your trusted devices. So even if your account is compromised and your password is stolen by a hacker, they cannot access your account when protected by 2-step verification.

2-step authentication is hard to find because many sites call it something different. Some call it Login Verification, some call it 2-step...but we have provided a little list of some popular sites and links to their 2-step verification features. We recommend you use them.

Banks and Financial sites:
  • Bank of America's SafePass. When enabled on your account, it will text you to verify each login to your bank account. If you keep your money at Bank of America, adding this extra layer of security is probably a good idea.
  • Schwab 2-factor token. They send you a device free of charge, you press a button on the device, and enter the code when logging into your account. If you use Schwab to handle your money, adding this extra layer of security is probably a good idea. You must call them at 800-435-4000 to get the token.
  • eTrade Mobile Security ID
Websites: Web Management Services (for IT professionals):
  • GoDaddy 2-step Authentication. Very good idea to have this on the registrar that manages your domains, however IT managers may find Godaddy's implementation of 2-step a bit annoying. Godaddy accounts are often shared amongst IT team members, and there can only be one phone used with their 2-step authentication.
  • Amazon Web Services Multi-Factor Authentication. For Amazon hosting and Amazon Glacier storage.
Update (6pm EDT): Mashable has put together a list of sites that you should change your password on. If you use any of the sites affected, you should change your password. Additionally, if the site supports 2-step authentication, we do suggest enabling that as well.
